Designed by Waldron Bates in the early 1900's, his cairns create a specific type of trail marker at Acadia National Park. The markers use a pointer stone, along with base stones, to indicate the direction of the trail. At times, two layers of base rocks are used to increase visibility. Bates cairns are essential on trails where other markers like color coded blazes can potentially be hard to see, particularly on exposed granite.

Inspired by Waldron Bates' cairns, these prints serve as a metaphor for hopeful path finding while we experience an unprecedented time in the “united” states of america. This Fractured Land exhibited along with a guest lecture for students at Plymouth State University, Plymouth New Hampshire, Fall of 2025.
